The Biotic Series
About the Biotic Series
Evolution of the Biotic Series
Occasionally I find myself bored with what I need to paint, and I turn my attention elsewhere. If nothing else for a short break. If I am lucky, I find a new technique or visual addition for my painting lexicon. I’ll choose an unsuccessful painting, using it for “playtime explorations”. I picked and unfinished and already reworked, numerous times, View from Above, a Series exploring the landscape from an aerial perspective. It was likely destined for the dumpster, with nothing to lose. It was Playtime!
I began “cutting” around any areas of interest, colors or patterns with my paint and brush. I got excited! I found myself sinking down from above the clouds and into pond water. I found a memory! It was my childhood fascination for a set of Dioramas at the local Natural History Museum. Consisting of 3 small boxes, showing different levels of magnifications from a single drop of pond water. It was a world with-in a world and magical!. So many wonderfully odd shapes connecting and interacting together and presented with fun colors. I went back and viewed them again, numerous times. I spent the rest of day and more as I painted, looking to keep those unique memories alive. I really did a happy dance every time I saw the painting over the next days.
Was this a fluke? I took a few more paintings and deliberately began the same process. Always cognizant of finding the best use of my time, I began thinking “How can I do this without first needing a bad painting?” So began my new evolution with my paintings and this new Series.
Decent Into The Biotic
#26 2015 16X20 oil on paper.jpg Oil on Paper 20 x 16 inches. Again I painted this piece at the Baca Street Studio -Gallery and is an example of the next evolution in this series. I t was started with the intention of a Biotic painting. I first approached it by building layers of patterns and colors. Once that was all dry I came back and "cut-out" the shapes using the burnt orange and pale lavender/pink paint.
First Biotic Painting
#2 DescriptionThis is the very first discovery painting I created from a sad and dusty, failed 'View From Above' painting. I was playing around to see what I might save and use to transform it into something more interesting. It was painted on an expensive cradled panel and I just hate wasting my materials! This painting is in my personal collection. First discovery paintings are very special and always unique with more than just the final visual. I might sell offer a limited edition of Giclee prints. #27

I did have a great deal of fun with the shapes and colors. Painting the Background was the last thing and keeping the blue sinking deeper and deeper into the dark depths was nearly a week of work! And worth it! This painting sold. This is the very first discovery painting I created from a sad and dusty, failed 'View From Above' painting.
